Founded in 1780 by John Adams, John Hancock, and others, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences is one of the oldest learned societies in the United States. The Academy is dedicated to honoring excellence and convening leaders from every field to examine new ideas, address issues of importance to the nation and the world, and work together, as expressed in its charter, "to cultivate every art and science which may tend to advance the interest, honor, dignity, and happiness of a free, independent, and virtuous people.”

The Academy announced its 276 newly elected members which include extraordinary artists, scholars, scientists, and leaders in the public, non-profit and private sections. Mr. Li Lu is elected as a member in the “Business, Corporate, and Philanthropic Leadership” section in Class V.

Mr. Li Lu was born and raised in China. From 1990 to 1996, he attended Columbia University and earned three degrees simultaneously: B.A. in Economics from Columbia College, J.D. from Columbia Law School, and M.B.A. from Columbia Business School. He founded Himalaya Capital, now a multi-billion-dollar investment firm and he has been running the firm’s principal fund, Himalaya Capital Investors, LP, continuously since January 1, 1998.

He is featured in the Family of Voices, a part of the ongoing twenty-year Exhibition, starting in 2017, “Many Voices, One Nation” at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

Mr. Li Lu is dedicated to the education of Value Investing by sponsoring the first Value Investing course in China. The course has been running for five years since its opening in 2015 at Guanghua School of Management, Peking University. He also led the efforts of translating Poor Charlie’s Almanack into Chinese and publication in China. All proceedings of the book were donated to causes of general education and education of value investing. Mr. Li Lu’s book Civilization, Modernization, Value Investing, and China was recently published in China in April, 2020.

In January 2020, Mr. Li Lu co-founded the Guardians of the Angeles Charitable Foundation to combat the global COVID-19 crisis and now serves as Chairman of the Board of the Foundation. He has donated over $3.5 million in financial support and critical medical supplies to frontline medical workers and first responders in hundreds of hospitals in both the United States and China. In early March, Mr. Li Lu hosted a video conference between leading COVID-19 experts in China and leading scientists, health practitioners, and policy makers in the United States, which is the very first of such discussions in the U.S.
