TEXAS INSTRUMENTS NAMES DR. TEAL TO HEAD RESEARCH DIVISION

Dr. Gordon K. Teal, assistant vice president , has been appointed to head the Research division of Texas Instruments Incorporated effective January 1, President J. E. Jonsson has announced.

As Assistant Vice President - Research

for the Dallas-based electronics and geophysics firm, Dr. Teal will now have charge of all TI research, involving work in many phases of electronics and geophysics.

Previously Dr. Teal headed the Materials and Components Research

department, with primary responsibility for semiconductor research. Mr. R. W. Olson, TI vice president formerly in charge of Research and Engineering, in 1954 assumed the presidency of Houston Technical Laboratories, wholly owned TI subsidiary operating as the Petroleum Instrumentation division. transferred to HTL and a 6-acre tract has been purchased in Houston for new plant construction. A native Texan, Dr. Teal was born in Dallas and graduated from Baylor University in Waco in 1927.

He acquired Master ' s and Doctor's degrees

in chemistry from Brown University, where he studied under Prof. Charles A. Kraus, and was research associate in Prof. Harold C. Urey's laboratories at Columbia University for three years.

He has

conducted research in the fields of photoelectricit y , se c ondary emi ssion, photoconductance , electron multi pliers , silicon car bide varistors , heavy hydrogen, germanium and silicon rectifiers , microwave a t tenuators, borocarbon resistors, germanium and silicon singl e crystals, and transistors . Dr. Teal has some 46 patents granted or applied for as a result of his research in these fields.

Society, American Physical Society , Institut e of Radio Engineers , the Texas Academy of Science , Sigma Xi , and is presently Secretary - Treasurer of the Dallas-Fort Worth section of the I. R . E. In recent years Dr. Teal has been especially prominent in the research and development of semiconductor devices , particularly transistors (tiny and durable vacuum tube substitutes) .

He is credited with a major part

in developing the single crystal form of germanium , t he germanium junction transistor, the single crystal form o f silicon, silicon junction diodes, and the grown junction silicon transistor. "firsts" ... commercial production of transistors made from silicon, with its superior temperature and frequency characteristic s .. . and production of the low cost, high quality germanium transistors used in the first commercial transistorized radio receiver.

The resultant growth in TI semiconductor

manufacturing operations - -headed by Assistant Vice President Mark Shepherd, Jr. - is necessitating an addition to the main Dallas plant, on which construction is scheduled to begin soon.

LOW FREQUENCY SEISMIC REFRACTION SYSTEM ANNOUNCED BY HTL The new Very Low Frequency seismic refraction system--with special amplifiers linear from one to 50 cycles and unique refraction seismometers with a natural frequency of two cycles per second- -has been announced by Houston Technical Laboratories. The refraction method of seismic exploration has been limited i~ the past by the inability of instruments to record low frequency energy.

With the new VLF System low frequencies are easily recorded, resulting in wider and deeper probing of subs_urface conditions.

High system sensi-

tivity also permits the use of much smaller powder charges, reducing surface damage.

Well-defined first breaks have been received at five

miles froJh a five pound charge. The VLF System already is being applied to determine the thickness of sediments in large basins, to study the sedimentary column above massive Paleozoic sediments and to determine geologic structu.re in areas where the reflection method is _inefficient.

Due to its very, low

frequency response and good signa1-to-noise ratio, the VLF System is also uniquely suited to the delineation of salt domes in offshore waters. An outstanding feature of Houston Technical Laboratories new VLF System is the exceptionally low frequency response of the refraction (more)

combined with high outputs .of five volts per inch per second. With amplitude ratio of 4:1, two output signals from each of the 12 amplifier channels are recorded on a standard HTL RS-8 recording oscillograph.

The RS,-8 .is a 24-trace oscillograph that can be used for

either refraction or r~flection surveys by varying the paper speed from seven to 16 inches per second with a simple adjustment. System portability is .achieved through compact design of the 12.-channel amplifier, measuring 16-1/ 4 x 16 - 7 / 8 inches and weighing only 42 pounds. The VLF System utilizes a vibrator power pack feeding three )

separate voltage regulators to supply input, intermediate and output stages. Employing about 2100 persons and listed on the New York Stock

Exchange, Texas Instrument s is the largest local factor in the rapidly growing electronics industry. Tl's active research and developmen t program resulted in the introductio n of many well-receiv ed new products and services during 1954, President J. E. Jonsson stated.

Land has been purchased for one plant

expansion in Houston and another plant expansion will begin soon in Dallas. Mr. Jonsson estimated TI sales in 1954 as approximat ely $24,000,00 0. This is slightly below 1953 sales as a result of the general decline in U.S. a:".ld Canadian geophysica l exploration and a strctchout in military contracts early in the year.

"But as a result of a combinatio n of favorable factors, the outlook

for 1955 is for an increased sales volume exceeding not only 1954 but also the record 1953 level," he continued.

all-time high in 1955, aided by both the general interest in foreign exploration and the introduction of new geophysical instruments from Houston Technical Laboratories and consequent improved techniques. Three new GS! affiliates were established during 1954 to serve the growing foreign exploration effort, Mr. Jonsson revealed.

Geophysical

Service (Nederland) N. V. was established in July to serve Eur9pe, Asia and Africa.

GS! (Bahamas) Ltd. and GSI, Ltd .• both announced in December,

will operate in pound sterling areas.

The over-all Texas Instruments

exploration operation now consists of 11 GSI affiliates covering all areas of the free world.

NEW ELECTRONIC PRODUCTS In commercial electronics equipment, Tl's considerable research and development effort result.e d in several outstanding industry "firsts 11 during 1954.

These included the germanium transistors used in the first

transistorized radio available to the public, the first high temperature transistor made of silicon, and a complete line of 32 transistor - transformers. Of America I s "biggest names" in the electronics industry, only Texas Instruments has yet succeeded in producing in commercial quantities transistors (minute vacuum tube substitutes) niade of silicon.

silicon transistor has kept pace with demand with output now in the tens of thousands. Because of its superior characteristics, the silicon transistor has a great future in airborne and other complex electronics equipment where operating temperatures and frequencies are high.

Even though no

other electronics firm has yet mastered their production, in December TI made a 25% price reduction as a result of improved manufacturing techniques and expects this action to speed the commercial application of silicon transistors. The Texas firm scored another great electronics industry "first" in late 1954 when its low cost, high gain germanium transistors made possible the introduction of the first transistorized consumer product -- a pocket radio now on retail sale.

As late as September, Collier's magazine predicted that

a commercial transistorized radio receiver was several years away.

In late

October the radio using TI transistors was announced by Regency division of

I.D.E.A., Inc. and is now on sale in New York and Los Angeles and soon will be in Dallas and Texas.

Public reception has exceeded expectations, with the

radio manufacturer being hard put to meet demand in those areas alone.

Texas

Instruments has succeeded in producing the germanium transistors in quantities more than sufficient to meet the radio demand to date.

Mr. Jonsson remarked that sales of transistor and other semiconductor devices are expected to make an increasingly important contribution to consoli dated sales in 1955.

A 33,000 sq ft addition to the TI main plant at 6000

Lemmon Avenue will be built in the first quarter, principally to house the rapidly expanding semiconductor products, research, development, and manufacturing operations.

DEVELOPMENTS IN PETROLEUM INSTRUMENTATION Houston Technical Laboratories in 1954 saw its first full year of operation as a wholly owned subsidiary and as the Petroleum Instrumentation division of Texas Instruments.

HTL makes the geophysical instruments which

are used in petroleum and mining exploration by GSI and are available for purchase by others. Several new products were introduced by HTL during 1954, including: the High Resolution shallow reflection seismic system for mining and petroleum exploration, the versatile 7000 seismic reflection system, and Log Level Indicator seismic instrument, the MagneDisc magnetic disc recording seismic system, and the inexpensive and high quality Miraloy coated instrument mirrors. The expanded HTL activity in both geophysical instrumentation and precision optics production made another plant expansion necessary. Construction will begin in 1955 on a new and larger building now being designed.

A Government contract for $2,500,000 in airborne

electronics equipment has just been announced by TI. Military order backlog is currently some $13,000,000.

Military

business in 1955 is expected by President Jonsson to be at substantially the same level as in 1954.

DIVISIONALIZED ORGANIZATION TAKES EFFECT Taking effect on last January 1, the new TI ' "divisionalized'' organization had its first full year of operation in 1954.

Regarded as highly

successful by President Jonsson, the organization structure was changed from "furl.ctional 11 to "divisional;" wherein each product group performs its own development, purchasing, accounting, manufacturing, and marketing operations. This organizational structure inspires greater speed and flexibility of operation and is a great aid in developing the executive abilities needed in an expanding company.

SUMMARY AND OUTLOOK ln summarizing the 19 54 operations of Texas Instruments, Mr. Jonsson stated that he regarded the year's events as proof of the essential stability of a diversified, divisionalized organization.

'UNIQUE DISC-TYPE MAGNETIC RECORDER ANNOUNCED BY HTL

Commercial production of the first seismic magnetic recorder to use a disc as the recording medium has been announced by Houston Technical Laboratories. Trade-named MagneDISC, the new HT L system is an exceptionally convenient method for recording an unprecedented amount of seismic information.

Use of the magnetic disc makes possible the

recording of up to 96 data channels on one easy-to - load plastic disc, avoiding playback discontinuities , time consuming loading operation, data limitations, and other restrictions associated with magnetic systems that do not record on discs. Because recording is done in one complete revolution of the disc ( 5-1 /2 seconds) • the shot may be fired at any time . thus eliminating recorder starting problems.

MagneDISC is particularl y useful in any area where a number of shots, using different filter combinatio ns , are normally required to obtain an optimum record.

In such an area, MagneDISC makes unnecessar y

several conventiona l shots by means of broad band recording with subsequent playback using the necessary filters to get the optimum record. The MagneDISC ' s simplicity and speed of operation make it especially effective in offshore operations where shots are made at close intervals.

By reducing the number of shots required, MagneDISC also

simplifies seismic surveys in swamps, marshes and other areas of difficult terrain. In addition to present advantages of the disc-type magnetic recorder, office playback equipment and automatic computatio n techniques, both in advanced stages of developmen t by HTL, will make MagneDISC more useful than ever. Although the MagneDISC , with slight modificatio ns, can be used with any conventiona l seismic system, it is especially designed for the standard HTL 7000 seismic amplifier system.

Most versatile seismic

system available, the 7000 system provides a choice of three AGC speeds and a combinatio n of 1380 filter settings. The MagneDISC system itself consists of a compact drive unit, with frequency modulators , demodulato rs and test circuitry in a separate case.

Weight of the entire system, including power supply, is 282 pounds.

Equipped with magnetic recording heads for 48 seismic channels and 12 auxiliary channels, the standard model can record four 24-trace shots per disc.

The recorder can also be supplied with 96

recording heads, plus 19 auxiliary heads, grouped to record six 16-trace shots, two 48-trace shots,

or one 96-trace shot.

The disc is driven

by a fork controlled de motor to which it is gear coupled. The MagneDISC has a signal-to-noise ratio of 46 db where peak output signal is measured at 3/4 of 1% distortion and noise is the measured peak value.

Frequency response is + 3 db from 10 to 300 cps.

Base timing accuracy is + 0. 5 millisecond between traces with a timing signal accuracy of 1 part in 10 • 000. is 3/4 of 1%.

The measured harmonic distortion

Recording time is 5 seconds after the time break.

Demodulator output is 70 millivolts rms at 2. 2K ohms and 3 millivolts at 100 ohms for 0. 25 volts input at 250K ohms. The MagneDISC can be purchased or leased from HTL with or without the 7000 seismic amplifier system.

To familiarize customers

with the new recording system, HTL provides a two-week instruction course to operating personnel of MagneDISC purchasers. Houston Technical Laboratories is the petroleum instrumentation subsidiary of Texas Instruments Incorporated, which- - through Geophysical Service Inc., its geophysical exploration subsidiary- -was a pioneer organization in the development and application of the seismic technique.

Several significant accomplishments made 1954 a year of building for growth and diversification for Texas Instruments Incorporated, Dallas­ based firm specializ i ng in the manufacture of electronic and geophysical equipment and geophysical exploration for petroleum. TI' s active research and development program resulted in the introduction of many well - received new products and services during 1954, President J.E. Jonsson said in the Annual Report.

These included the first high temperature transistor made

of s i licon, germanium transistors used in the first transistorized radi o, and a complete line of subminiature transformers for use in transistor circuits. Texas Instruments is the only company in the electronics industry that has yet succeeded in producing commercial quantities of silicon transistors (minute vacuum tube substitutes).

airborne electronics systems, including radar, sonar, and magnetic airborne detection devices . . Military sales in 1954 were $12,829,602, with current backlog being approximately $13,000, 000. Houston Technical Laboratories, a subsidiary producing petroleum instrumentation, introduced in 1954 many new and significant geophysical instruments.

These included magneDISC for magnetic

recording and processing of seismic exploration data and a high resolution {HR) seismic system for detailing of shallow earth sections between 100 and 2500 feet in depth which were previously difficult to evaluate.

Several other new and redesigned instruments were added

during the year. By early this year the operations of Geophysical Service Inc. and the other TI geophysical subsidiaries were at an all-time high, having recov~red from an early 1954 exploration decline in Canada and the United States.

A new gravity division was organized in 1954.

Exploration crews are presently operating in the U.S . , Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Egypt, India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Portuguese West Africa.

The "Sonic", a 158-foot, 405 - ton ship, is

conducting single - ship marine seismic exploration in the Persian Gulf . New crews will soon begin operations in Colombia, the Yukon, Australia and Sumatra.

of Texas, she was graduated from Sweetwater High School and Texas State College for Women at Denton.

tration at Southern Methodist University and previously had worked with Phillips Petroleum Co., the Denver Public Library, Magnolia Petroleum Co., and Socony-Vacuum Oil Co.

She is a member of the American Association of

University Women. Mr. McCormack, 4544 Catina Lane, is a member of the bar in both Texas and New York and was graduated from Columbia College and Columbia University Schools of Business and Law.

Addition of this established line of

resistors will further strengthen the operations of the Tl Components division, which is currently manufacturing subminiature, pulse and in:strument transformers, coils. capacitors, filters, delay lines, and p'o wer supJtlies. The transfer of production operations to the Texas Instrtiltieitts Dallas operation is being scheduled so that deliveries to Radell's cuatomers will continue uninterrupted. Mr. J. P. Rodgers, Jr. is general manager of the TI Components division, which will manufacture and market the Radell resistors. Mr. John R. Pies, former Radell manager, will join Texas Instruments as chief engineer of the Components division. Currently entering its 25th year, Texas Instruments has long specialized in the development, design and manufacture of precise, highly ace urate instruments and systems.

Radell precision resistors - ranging in

resistance from 25 ohms to 30 million ohms, in ratings from 1/2 to 2 watts, with one per cent tolerances - ideally complement existing Tl products.

President Jonsson stated that Texas Instruments will continue the production of the Radell precision resistors and will keep them available to t."1-ie electronics industry at large.

It is also anticipated

that TI itself will use these resistors - along with other Components division products - in the assembly of the instruments and systems of the TI Apparatus and Petroleum Instrumentation divisions. The trend to transistorization and miniaturization in electronics equipment has been aided greatly by the commercial production of high temperature silicon and high frequency germanium transistors and diodes by the TI Semiconductor Products division.

Texas Instruments Incorporated of Dallas has filed a registration state ment with the Securities and Exchange Commission under the Securities Act of 1933 for a proposed offering of 165,945 shares of a new issue of $25 par value Cumulative Preferred Stock, J.E. Jonsson, president, announced today, April 13, 1955.

Subject to authorization by stockholders

at a meeting on April 20, the proposed issue will be offered to Common stockholders who will have the right to subscribe to the Preferred Stock on the basis of 1 share of Preferred for each 18 shares of Common.

The

registration statement is expected to become effective approximately

May 2, 1955.

The offering is expected to provide approximately

$4, 000, 000 of additional capital funds. The Preferred Stock will be convertible into shares of Common Stock on a basis to be determined shortly before the subscription offer to Common stockholders is made.

At the annual meeting of stockholders of Texas Instruments Incorporated, Dallas, held today at the Company's office, the stockholders approved an amendment to the Company's charter authorizing the issuance of 300,000 shares of Cumulative Preferred Stock of $25 par value. J. E. Jonsson, president, announced at the stockholders meeting that more than 85% of the outstanding stock and 99% of the shares voting had voted in favor of the proposal. He stated that subject to approval by the Securities and Exchange Commission of a registration statement which was filed on April 13, 19 55, it was the Company's pre sent intention to offer to its stockholders the right to subscribe to 165,945 shares of Convertible Preferred Stock on the basis of 1 share of Preferred for each 18 shares of Common held.

Mr. Jonsson said that it

was planned to make the subscription offer on May 2, 1955, or such date as the registration statement becomes effective. The dividend rate, conversion privileges, and redemption rights for the new series of Preferred Stock will be fixed in advance of the offering.

He advised the stockholders that the

new issue would raise approximately $4,000,000 which would (more)

be used to repay bank loans and to finance expanding geophysical operations and semiconductor manufacturing activities.

Mr. Jonsson

also told the stockholders that arrangements were being made with Morgan Stanley & Co. of New York to manage an underwriting group to purchase the unsubscribed shares from the Company. At the meeting all of the Compan.y 1 s directors were re-elected. Mr. Jonsson reported to the stockholders on the Company's operations for the first quarter of 1955.

Earnings per share after

taxes for the first quarter were 13¢ per share for the first quarter of 1955 compared to 12¢ per share for the first quarter of 1954 and sales for the period were $6,310,000 compared to $6,725,000 for the like period in 1954.

He noted that the upward trend of geophysical

operations for the Company's geophysical subsidiaries which had be­ come evident by year-end 1954 was continuing and that geophysical billings were at an all-time high with 58 crews in the field as of April 2, 1955.

Many of the new geophysical contracts are for

exploration in foreign areas such as Australia, India, Pakistan, Turkey, Colombia, Egypt and Sumatra. Construction of an addition to the Dallas main plant has begun for expansion of semiconductor research and manufacturing activities.

FOUR NEW SILICON VOLT AGE REFERENCE DIODES ANNOUNCED BY TEXAS INSTRUMENTS

For extremely accurate voltage reference, four new types of silicon diodes have been announced by Texas Instruments Incorporated.

With

reverse breakdown voltage (measured at 5 ma), ranging from 3. 7 to 8. 0 volts, the new silicon voltage reference diodes feature extremely small breakdown voltage temperature coefficients from -55° C to

+150° C.

This temperature coefficient, which can be positive or

negative, is combined with very low dynamic resistance in the breakdown region to provide an ideal device for constant voltage reference purposes.
