Texas Instruments Incorporated and Geophysical Service Inc . are completing e x tensive additions to their office and plant facilities located at

6000 Lemmon A venue in Dallas ' Air lawn industrial area .

The addition is desig ned to rnore t h an double t he p res ent floor space and is laid out to facilitate t h e design, development a n d production of complex electronic and mechanical instruments.

Construction is scheduled for com-

pletion by mid-July and will represent an e x penditure of more than one million dollars.

Present floor space is 60, 000 square feet which, in its e l f , represent s an i n crease of 23 , 000 square feet to the original building completed in 1946 . The current e x pansion will ma ke available a total of 150, 000 square feet in the main building for laboratory, manufacturing and office use .

plant, the con1pany also occupies a second plant of 14, 800 square f e et located two doors from the main plant and a 2 5 , 000 square foot warehouse in the Trinity industrial district .

Floor coverings vary in different parts of the building. offices are to be carpeted and walls paneled.

Since that time, it has had, under contract with the major

oil companies, a number of field crews~now numbering more than 50----operating in every oil producing country in the world.

Soon after its inception a group

was. organized to conduct the laboratory and manufacturing activities required to design and build the equipment necessary for the field crews.

It was this

group that later became known as Texas Instruments Incorporated.

Initially the

companies had office space in the Republic National Bank Building and lauoratory and shop space on Harwood Street.

In March 1946, their building at 6000 Lemmon Avenue was started with all but the office area being occupied by early 1947. entire structure was occupied.

NEW HERMETICALLY SEALED TRANSISTORS AND BULLETIN

Two new production types of hermetically sealed , grown-junction transistors are covered in the Texas Instruments Bulletin DL-S 310 , just released.

Types 2p0 and 201 - both n-p-n triodes with glass-to-

metal hermetic sealing - differ principally in collector resistance and amplification factor.

The new bulletin contains two pages on the theory and application of junction transistors , as well as detailed specifications and curves on the Texas Instruments units.

Alpha ( current amplification factor) is a

guaranteed minimum of. 90 in Type 200 and . 95 in Type 201 transistors.

Already in successful operation as a pen - recording meter movement in airborne military gear, this sensitive and durable magnetic fluid clutch meter/positioner is newly introduced to commercial use.

The output shaft mechanism will deflect up to

120° with maximum rated output torque of 5. 25 oz-in. at 4 milliamperes . The movement combines smooth and precise performance --responding linearly to signals from 10 to 500 microamps -­ with long life in hard service.

It is accurate to within 5% and,

as currently applied, has "flat" frequency response up to 5 cps. Simply and durably built, it has a life of over 3000 hours. The movement consists of two small magnetic fluid clutches (. 46 lb . each) geared to rotate in opposition with their output shafts linked.

The output shaft mechanism responds to the resultant

developed torques of the clutch input coil signals .

TRANSISTOR BULLETIN

A new fou:t--page bulletin covering two types of hermetically sealed point-contact transistors has just been released by Texas Instruments Incorporated.

Of special interest to electronic design engineers is the

two-page section on the theory and application of point-contact transistors ... complete with formulae, equivalent circuits, and characteristic curves.

The other two pages describe the Types 102 and 103 point-contact transistors, which differ principally in Cutoff Time.

A new two-page bulletin describing their instrument size mag:retic fluid clutch metering/posit ioning movement, recently has been released by Texas Instruments Incorporated .

Today ' s exceptional corporate growth potential was emphasized in talks by officials opening the Texas Instruments Incorporated expanded Dallas plant in mid - November.

Texas Instruments has increased its net sales from under

$5, 000, 000 in 1948 to almost $30,000, 000 this year, according to J. E. Jonsson, President.

"And we think the future is just as promising , " Mr. Jonsson said in the dedication address to employes and visitors.

He referred to the September

travels in the course of geophysical exploration only make us more satisfied with Texas , " he said.

This is a major advance toward realizing the full potential for

equipment miniaturization offered by transistors.

Overall length of the case has been reduced from . 500 to • 300 in., down to less than a third of an inch! through three leads,

Connections are made to the transistor case

supplied already tinned and 1 1/2 in. long,

suitable for

soldering into the circuit or clipping to desired length and plugging into a subminiature socket.

This 40% cut in transistor case size was achieved by shortening only the case . No other change was made in the materials or fabrication methods used for the field proven Texas Instruments junction transistors.

glass-to-metal hermetic sealing and electrical].y insulating finish both also remain unchanged.

Texas Instruments Incorporated Acquires Houston Technical Laboratories

Confirming an ear lier announcement of negotiations, President J. E. Jonsson of Texas Instruments Incorporated, Dallas, has announced that Houston Technical Laboratories has been acquired by Texas Instruments Incorporated. P. E. Haggerty, executive vice-president, a nd R. W. Olson, vice-president, of Texas Instruments completed the final arrangement s in Houston with Mr. Sam P. Worden, president of Houston Technical Laboratories .

President Jonsson announced that 27,650 newly issued shares of TI stock h as been exchanged for all the outstanding shares of Houston Technical Laboratories.

The Houston company will continue in operation as a wholly

owned s ubsidiary of Texas Instruments.

Mr. R. W. Olson was elected

president of Houston Technical Laboratories and will be responsible for its operation.

Mr. Worden will remain with the company as vice-president.

Houston Technical Laboratories manufactures gravity me t ers and spec i al optical components primarily for the oil industry.

Thi s addition to the TI

family--which includes Geophysical Service Inc. and s e veral international exploration GSI affiliates and Engi neering Supply Company of Dallas and Tulsa--will further broaden the scope of Texas Instr ument s a ctivit i es.

Houston Technical

Laboratories employs about 40 people and is housed ~n a modern air-con­ ditioned brick building having approximately 9, 000 square feet of floor space.

Texas Instruments manufactures a wide range of geophysical equipment which has been operated successfully all over the world by GSI field crews.

Some

of this equipment is now being made available to the petroleum industry at large.

It is expected that the manufacture of some equipment will be transferred from the Texas Instruments Dallas plant to the Houston location to make use of the skilled personnel and precision facilities located there.

Texas

Instruments also manufactures a wide range of commercial and military electronic and electro-mechanical equipment, in addition to geophysical exploration equipment.

with operating divisions separated by specialties rather than by products.

Beginning January 1, Texas I n struments will change to a "staff-product" organization with four new ope r ating d i vi s i ons for major product lines. These divisions w i ll perform the functions necessary to the design, manufacture and distribution of t h e : r respective products.

The four new divisions being established are: Apparatus, Semiconductor Products , Compon e n ts , and Pet roleum Instrumentation.

President Jonsson

explained that t h e o rgani zational change wa s motivated by the increas i ng number of prod uct s and volume o f busin ess both achieved and anticipated by Texas Instr u ments.

Vice President W. F . Joy ce w i ll assume responsibility for the Apparatus Division , producing c o mplex electro - mechanical systems and devices.
